PRESIDE PRODUCTIVELY through PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE.
Speaker : DTM Low Yat Seow

Long and unproductive meetings. No agenda.
Everyone seems to be talking at the same time except the Chairman!
Familiar scenes at a meeting?
As Toastmasters, we preside over or attend meetings regularly, and how
they are conducted will greatly influence our organizational skills.
The tools to run efficient and democratic meetings are very crucial
indeed, and
Parliamentary procedure is a code of rules and ethics for working
together in a group.

This workshop aims to provide the audience with the vital parliamentary
tools to organize, influence, and expedite meetings in a simple and
clearly understandable manner.

We need the meeting "know hows" in order to manage a meeting.
So come join us in this exciting workshop about meeting tools!

Low Yat Seow, DTM,
has served in various leadership positions in Toastmasters
International.
He was President of D’ Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club the Division
Governor of the Year during his term as Division C Governor 2000/2001.

has provided a solid foundation in parliamentary procedure.
Yat Seow has successfully conducted workshops in parliamentary procedure

MOVE A MOUNTAIN – MENTOR A MEMBER!
Speaker : DTM Maimunah Natasha

A mentor is not a teacher or a trainer.

Mentoring benefits not only the mentee but the mentor as well as the
organization he/she is in.

In this module, the speaker presents a unique method to help members,
new and established, to achieve their potential and receive maximum
benefits from the club and the organization they are in.

Maimunah Natasha, DTM, is a Past District Governor who led District 51
to the Number One District status in the world in the year 1999-2000.
A successful leader and chairperson for 2 steel manufacturers, Maimunah
holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Economics, as well as a Masters
of Arts in English Literature.
She is a much sought after public speaker and trainer in the
International arena.
One of the highlights of her colourful speaking career thus far, was as
a speaker at the 66th Toastmasters International Convention in New
Orleans in 1997, when she spoke on the topic ‘Dare to Fail’.

Maimunah attributes most of her achievements to her experiences as a
mentor and a mentee.

She reminds all Toastmasters to CREATE OUR DESTINY, MOVE BEYOND and
achieve success by DAR-ing TO EXCEL through MENTORING!

EVENT MANAGEMENT - A SHOW WITH A SPARKLE!
Speaker : DTM Christopher Teo

How often have you attended a convention or an event and felt that
you should have spent your precious time elsewhere?
Organizing events and planning meetings seem so simple when we are
participants, yet it is only when we are in the ‘hot-seat’ as
organizer/chairperson that we realize how daunting the whole task may
seem!

As a meeting planner, we can all organize a truly memorable event that
captivates the audience, if only we put in the effort and pay heed to
the finer details involved.

Join Christopher Teo as he shares his experience on the finer
‘sparkling’ skills in:
1) Organising effective meetings
2) Staging a successful speech contest
3) Planning a successful conference.

Christopher Teo, DTM, has been a Toastmaster since 1991 and is currently
the Immediate Past District Governor of District 51.
He led the District to the ‘Excellence in Leadership’ award during his
term as District Governor in 2000-2001.
Christopher was the organizing co-chairman of the PANSEA 1999 District
51 Convention in Singapore.
He has been invited as a keynote speaker and forum speaker at several
District 51 conventions.
Christopher holds a Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons.) Degree from the
National University of Singapore and is currently Manager (Finance and
Administration) of Sentosa Cove Pte. Ltd. in Singapore.

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP FOR EVERYONE
Speaker : DTM Christine Temblique

Leadership has multiple facets.
An officer is not necessarily a leader and a leader need not be with a
title or position.
An effective leader is one whose task gets done and who influences
people to behave accordingly to achieve a common goal.
In this module, Christine Temblique, DTM, will draw from her vast
experience as a leader by answering the following questions:
1) What is a Leader?
2) How should we prepare for a leadership role?
3) What are the principles of effective leadership?
4) What are the realities of being a leader?

Christine Temblique, DTM
is currently International Director of Toastmasters International,
for the term 2001-2003.
She was District Governor of District 75 for the term 1998-1999.

from St.Theresa’s College and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA)
from De LaSalle University, and is the Owner/Treasurer of M.C. Display &
Metalcraft Corporation.

She has held leadership positions in other organizations, including the
Soroptomist International of Meycauayan chapter (Director 1991- 1996)
and the Inner Wheel Club of Meycauayan (President 2001-2002).

Besides having been a keynote speaker in many organizational events,
Christine has also conducted educational workshops in leadership at
various conventions.

 Plenary Session I
25 May 2002 (Saturday)
1.45pm-2.45pm
"Moments of Truth - Take Control of Your Destiny"
Speaker : International President, DTM Alfred Herzing

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Take control of Your Destiny

More and more, organizations throughout the world realize that exemplary service
must accompany a quality product if customers are to remain happy.
We can certainly draw the same conclusion when it comes to Toastmasters clubs.

Remember the first time you attended a Toastmasters meeting?
Almost immediately someone stepped forward to greet you, asked your name and
introduced you to other club members.
Within moments you had made a decision: “This is a friendly group of people!”

In this plenary session, learn from the Toastmasters International President himself as he shares with us those special “moments of truth” and how we, as Toastmasters, can use such episodes to strengthen and improve our club.

A dedicated Toastmaster for 16 years, Alfred Herzing, DTM, has served as an
officer at various levels, beginning at the club level and working his way up to his
prestigious current position.  He was elected to the office of International President in August 2001, during the Toastmasters’ International Convention in Anaheim,
California.

He has advanced through many positions in his professional career as well.  He
credits the skills he gained as a leader in Toastmasters in helping him earn many of the promotions he has received since becoming a member.  He currently serves as an Information Technology Director for Beckman Coulter, Inc., a manufacturer of
life science and clinical lab instrument systems based in Southern California.

“I believe firmly in the power of the Toastmasters program to change lives,” says
Herzing. As a result, Herzing’s motto for his year in office is “Take Control Of Your
Destiny.”

District 51 9th Annual Convention
Palace of the Golden Horses
Kuala Lumpur
24-26 May 2002

www.welcome.to/pansea2002

(the HOTTEST happening on 24 May 2002 Friday
from 6.30pm onwards until you want to stop)

Hello friends in Toastmasters,

All geared up for PANSEA KL2002, the happening event for District 51?
The fever is on.. I can feel the excitement building up.

I can just visualize our District leaders leading us to fun , and more
fun, so that we derive more out of this grand convention of the
Toastmasters' year. Yes, apart from the serious stuff of achieving high
educational and leadership excellence, our leaders are going to show us
that Toastmasters is FUN, too.

We start the fun on Thursday night - an informal Social Night for all
delegates who arrive early. Watch out for our news on this event soon
by our Team Leaders of Social Night.

The ROLL CALL on Friday night - Welcome Night, calls for participation
from all delegates. Those who are not on stage, stand up at your seat
and sing along, wave, dance or whatever merry making stunts you can
think of, when your country is being called out. Make yourself be heard,
be known. We are not scouting for talents, so it does not matter if you
go out of tune. Everyone will be forgiven for croaking like a frog...
including Us.. from Kuala Lumpur.

NOW THE SERIOUS BIT.......

Our M.C. will be calling out the delegates from the various countries,
and naming the divisions in that particular country. The order given
below is not the order of appearance that will be announced by our M.C.
The order of appearance will be based on the song selected by that
particular country. Please observe the recommendations on the style of
dressing that we have put beside the song.

1. SINGAPORE: Div. B, Div. D, Div. S, Div. M(S'pore)
2. MALAYSIA: Div. A, Div. N, Div. E, Div. K and Brunei
Div. M (Malaysia)
3. THAILAND: Div. T
4. INDONESIA: Div. I
5. HONGKONG: Div. H
6. FOREIGN: Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, China?, U.S.A.
(any other foreign delegate outside D51)
7. HOSTS: Div. C, Div. W

Attention all DIVISION GOVERNORS:

Please let us know how many delegates from your country are going on
stage for the ROLL CALL. We can accomodate up to 26 delegates to be on
stage at one time.

For those countries that have a thinner group, we will make up the
numbers from our side.

Our ROLL CALL leader, Ms. Tan Saw Bee, will go through the routines with
you, on Friday afternoon. For those who have to be at District Council
Meeting, and are involved in the Roll Call Presentation, may I suggest
that you do not select song No. 3. The routines are very simple: SING
ALONG, dressed to the style recommended, and Sway a little. That's all.

Once you have made your choice of the song, we will make arrangements to
courier the burnt CD to the leaders of the group. The leader of the
Foreign Delegates is GINA from Philippines.

SONGS (Each song is about 50 secs.) - order of appearance is determined
by the order of song.

1. SAN FRANCISCO
Fashion: Hippies [ flower people - long hair ]

2. WORLD OF OUR OWN (by Seekers)
Fashion: Bell bottoms, Dog Eared collar, John Lennon's specs,
any 60s apparel

3. RHINESTONE COWBOY
Fashion: Boleros, vest, jeans, checked shirts.
If you like line-dancing, go for this. Saw Bee will help
you with the steps during the Friday rehearsal. I
promise you... it's easy and fun. You won't lose sleep
or hair with this.

4. YOUNG ONES (Cliff Richard)
Fashion: Anything as decent as Cliff Richard.. and
naturally, it's the fashion of the 60s.

5. ROCK A HULA (Elvis)
Fashion: Hawaiian shirts, drain-pipe pants,
curry puff hairdo (for men), beehive hairdo (for ladies)
oops... curry puff is a Malaysian and Singapore pastry.
(explanation for the blissfully ignorant)

6. HARD DAY'S NIGHT (Beatles)
Fashion: Anything 60s will do. Hairdo: MOP-HEAD

7. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
Fashion: Flare skirts with fitting blouses, drain pipe pants.
Hairdo: pony tail, flicked out shoulder length hair (ladies) Drain pipe
trousers, fitting shirts. Hairdo: greased to perfection (not a hair out
of place after a typhoon)

Friends, friends... don't fret. Try digging out your mum or dad's
closet for the fashion of the 60s. Otherwise, just improvise. This is
the time to show-case your creativity.

I like to narrate the words of our ROLL CALL LEADER, Ms. Tan Saw Bee
(former District 51 Table Topics Champion):

The Stage Is The Most Powerful
Platform for Communication.
People who communicate,
Must communicate with
Their Body and Their Movements.
It is the Expression of The Soul.

We are counting on you to start the merry-making with your
participation.

Division leaders, gather your people together, and let them shine with
the EXPRESSION OF THEIR SOUL.

Tell us your preferred song, we send you the CD. A gentle note... Songs
are reserved on the FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS. So do make your
decisions quick.

Let's Get Connected.... at PANSEA KL2002

(The inspirational message below is from our KL2002 Welcome Nite
Director - DTM Sheila Wong)

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

If you have not signed up for PANSEA KL2002 held at Palace of Golden
Horses from May 24 to May 26, 2002, NOW is a good time to do so. All
you need to do is download the registration form from our website:
http://www.welcome.to/pansea2002

There are 101 reasons on why you MUST BE AT PANSEA KL2002. I am not
going to wear out your mind with all of them today. I leave it to our
O.C. Tham Chee Wah, DTM, to give you the reasons periodically.

I can name two wonderful reasons for a start.

1. PANSEA KL2002 start unofficially on May 23, 2002 (Thursday
night). We are having an "Ice-Breaking" party at the convention venue:
Palace Of Golden Horses, on Thursday evening. This is for all delegates
who arrive early, to start their networking. We like to get everyone
connnected. And it's absolutely free, compliments from PANSEA KL2002.

2. WELCOME NIGHT on May 24, 2002.

The theme of the night: THE 60s COMES ALIVE

Come dressed in your most outrageous costume of the 60s. You can
impersonate some stars or singers from any country,
depicting the 60s era. Visit our website for ideas. OR you can come as
you wish. The choice is yours. However, you will feel more IN when you
dressed to the theme"

We will be having "SENSATIONAL 60S DISCOVERY".
This calls for teamwork. Delegates from within their division,
whichever clubs they belong to, form a team of minimum 4 members and no
maximum. Preferred no. of pax per team is 6 members. The team named
after their divisions, will come up with an entertaining item of minimum
3 minutes and maximum 5 minutes. The item can be a musical, a dance
performance, a song, a band of musicians playing musical instruments, an
impersonation of some movies or concert, BUT IT MUST DEPICT THE ERA OF
THE 60S.

2 top prizes of 6 units per prize will be awarded to the top 2 Most
Sensational Discovery.

This item is NOT COMPULSORY, but we do encourage you to unearth your
talents from within your division. You don't know what treasure you
have amongst your friends. Who knows, some talent scout may be around,
and make you into a STAR overnight.

Anyway, it's all for the fun of it, and we need your sporting spirit to
make the night FUN AND ENJOYABLE. It's your night, friends - IT'S YOUR
CONVENTION.

However, to help us to plan the programme smoothly, we need to have a
closing date for this "SENSATIONAL 60S DISCOVERY". Let us know if you
want to participate in this contest. Please liaise with your Area
Governor or Division Governor first, so that we will not have more than
one team from the same division. We like to have as many teams as
possible, but due to time constrain, we are only able to accomodate one
team per division.

The closing date for "SENSATIONAL 60s DISCOVERY" is MARCH 31, 2002.
Please email to me asap to confirm your
participation. I will be sending out the rules for contest by next
week.

So, my dearest friends, aren't these two reasons good enough for your
to come to PANSEA KL2002? It's the HAPPENING THING of District 51 for
2002.

Let's Get Connected....

Regards

Sheila Wong, DTM

MESSAGE FROM LILIAN LAU DTM
DISTRICT GOVERNOR
DISTRICT 51

Greetings fellow Toastmasters from District 51!

All roads lead to Kuala Lumpur in May! District 51 will be holding its 9th Annual Convention in Kuala Lumpur at the magnificent Palace of the Golden Horses on May 24-26 the Year of the Horse.

On the first day, there will be Business Meetings for both District Officers and Club Officers. Division and Area Governors will be attending our District Executive Committee meeting. Club Presidents and Vice-Presidents Education will represent their respective clubs at the all important District Council meeting. This is an opportunity for Club Officers and Toastmasters to learn more about Toastmasters beyond their Club environment. I look forward to meeting all District Officers and Club Officers at these meetings.

District 51 is most privileged to have our 2001-2002 International President Alfred Herzing DTM grace the convention at the invitation of the District. This will be a rare opportunity for members to meet our International President in person. Meet our International President at the "Meet the International President" session. Hear our International President deliver his keynote speech and learn from his educational session on "Moments of Truth" To top it all, our International President has accepted my invitation to present the "URANUS" award from the Star Series Awards to Clubs which achieve 9 to 10 DCP Goals by April 30.

The organizing committee has planned a convention with a difference . They have been very creative with the aim to mesmerize you with fun-filled learning experiences through interesting educational sessions and "get connected" fellowship evenings.

On the final day, we have the District International Speech Contest which will bring together our very best. The winner will proceed to San Antonia, Texas for the Inter-District International Speech Contest in August 2002.

All roads lead to Kuala Lumpur in May! Take Control and Create Your Destiny!

Let's Get Connected With the Public Holidays

Happy New Year!
2002 is going to be an amazing year ahead.
Because we are going to meet each other in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- a place where Asia, Truly Lives!

In Malaysia, we had a fiesta of holidays for the month of December 2001.

Our Muslim friends had their Hari Raya celebration (after 1 month of
fasting)
Then came Christmas and after that, the New Year holidays.
So, from 15/12/2001 until 1/1/2002, we were swinging with the
festivities one after another.
Now, the whole nation is getting ready for the Chinese New Year come
February 2002.
Talk about holiday celebration, Malaysians know it all.

In fact, if you don't know yet.......
District 51 Annual Convention in Kuala Lumpur this year
falls on 2 very special occasions.
25 May 2002 is the Birthday of Prophet Mohammad - Saturday, Public
Holiday
26 May 2002 is Wesak Day - Sunday, therefore, Monday is a Public
Holiday.

If you are working in Malaysia and planning your holidays, why not plan
to meet up with our fellow Toastmasters at the KL2002? And meet up with
our International President, DTM Alfred Herzing too?

Pick up a registration form now and sign up immediately.

Let's Get Connected - with our International President, Alfred Herzing, DTM
Mr Herzing was elected for a one-year term at the organization’s 70th Annual International Convention, held August 22-25 in Anaheim, California.

An active and dedicated Toastmaster for 16 years, Herzing firmly believes that good communication skills are essential to success in life. He credits the skills he gained as a leader in Toastmasters in helping him earn many of the career advancements he has experienced
since becoming a member. “I believe firmly in the power of the Toastmasters program to change lives,” says Herzing, who is an IT Director for Beckman Coulter Inc. in Fullerton, California. As a result, Herzing’s motto for his year in office is “Take Control Of Your
Destiny.”

“Instead of falling victim to circumstances, we can decide to make a change to our circumstances,” he says. “We must take action.”

“While the idea of speaking in front of an audience intimidates most people, it’s a skill that anybody can learn,” Herzing says. And overcoming a fear of speaking leads to increased self-confidence, which in turn often spurs people on to conquer other obstacles. “Our
organization is full of people who have achieved results beyond their wildest dreams,” he says. “Whether you are scared to death at the thought of facing an audience or a more seasoned speaker wanting to improve your effectiveness, Toastmasters can help you.”

This is an excerpt from a sample Press Release from Toastmasters
International.

Let's Get Connected With 1,000 delegates

An exciting 3-day convention program waiting for you.
Let me give you a sneak preview :

Friday 24 May 2002
7.00pm - 12.00 midnight
Welcome Nite
Theme - "60's Comes Alive"

Cest la vie! Start preparing yourself with that bee-hive hair-do and
white sensuous
elbow-high silk glove, add on your Marilyn Monroe’s seductive mole,
blink with Bette Davis killler eye lashes, at last, look totally
innocent with Elizabeth Taylor’s sweet sixteen hues and cries.

For the gentlemen, search for your bell-bottom and swing your legs as
Elvis Presley’s, gel up a curry-puff blob of hair like Marlon Brando,
funk it with the coolest side-burn like James Dean , then tilt your body
a little with that smirk like Gene Kelly and when you speak, the first
sentence uttered, “hey....babe.....how ya doin’....?”

Let us update you on the program on our next e-mailing news.
